Stainless steel SUS303
SUS303 is an austenitic stainless steel that is rated as “free-machining” since it is mainly used for parts that need to be manufactured, grounded, or polished. This alloy has good corrosion resistance in mild environments and good forming properties. It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and can only be hardened by benchwork.
The addition of sulfur is responsible for 303’s improved machining and machining properties, reducing its corrosion resistance to below SUS304. As for other austenitic grades, the structure gives inox 303 a wonderful durability, although the sulfur in SUS303 reduces its toughness.
In addition, the stainless steel 303Se (UNS S30323) has selenium rather than sulfur addition, which improves the hot and cold forming properties compared to stainless steel 303 and providing a smoother machined surface. The manufacturing rate is also decreased slightly.
