Stainless Steel SUS440C
Stainless steel SUS440C
SUS440C stainless steel (as known as 440C stainless steel) is a high alloy steel with better hardness and corrosion resistance than other types of steels, which is due to its large amounts of chromium. Based on the crystal structure, SUS440C is categorized into 3 groups as ferritic, austenitic and martensitic steels. There is another stainless steel group called precipitation hardening steels. SUS440C is a combination of martensitic and austenitic steels.

Manufacturing Ability
Stainless steel SUS440C (aka stainless steel 440C) can be manufactured in the annealed condition. Chip breakers can be used to handle hardware and string chips. Specialized machinery is required for this alloy.
- Welding: Very difficult to weld because it is easy to harden in the air. To weld this alloy, it needs to be preheated to 260°C (500°F) and welded after curing at 732 – 760°C (1350 – 1400°F) then cooled slowly in the oven in 6 hours to prevent cracking.
- Benchworking: impossible
- Hot working: Heating SUS440C to 760°C (1400°F) and the temperatures can rise up to 1038 -1204°C (1900 – 2200°F). Do not heat below 927°C (1700°F). Then cool slowly at room temperature and incubate completely.
- Hardening: SUS440C stainless steel can be hardened by heating at 760°C (1400°F) and the temperature can be increased up to 1010°C (1850°F), followed by cooling in air or oil.
Applications
SUS440C stainless steel (440C stainless steel) is commonly used in cutlery, bearings, die dies, valve components, or measuring instruments.
